Laboratory

The Hope Center’s in-house laboratory provides diagnostic testing to aid our veterinarians in diagnosing, treating, and long term management of each patient’s individual needs. Our laboratory is run by trained technicians 24/7 to ensure testing is available day or night. In addition, all in-house analyzers are maintained according to manufacturer’s specifications, and additional quality controls are also maintained to ensure accuracy of testing being performed.

Analyzers

The Roche COBAS Integra 400 Plus is a human hospital grade wet chemistry analyzer, with a sample load of up to 45 patients at once. It also has the ability to run not only serum and plasma for clinical chemistry, but also urine, body cavity effusion and cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). While general chemistries that test for organ function is the primary function of the COBAS, it is also capable of running specialty testing such as Urine Protein: Creatinine ratios, Fructosamine assays, as well as ammonia levels.

The Heska Hematrue is a veterinary hematology analyzer, offering a three-point differential as well as RBC indices and platelet counts. Our laboratory technicians also review each complete blood count (CBC) manually to asses both red cell and white cell morphology, platelet estimates, manual differentials, as well as look for any other abnormalities that can be found on microscopy. On the occasion that any abnormals are found, our trinocular microscope has the ability to capture images and record live video so it can be shown to both specialists, outside reference laboratories and pathologists to confirm our findings.

New to our facility is the acquisition of IDEXX’s new hematology analyzer, the ProCyte DX. The ProCyte combines the latest and greatest of technologies (flow cytometry, fluorescence, and impedance) to give veterinarians the most accurate results in veterinary hematology available. It offers a 5-point differential as well as RBC indices, platelet counts and absolute reticulocyte counts and prints out with scatter dot plots.

The NOVA Biomedical STAT Critical Xpress Analyzer is a consolidated STAT analyzer with up to 20 measured whole blood tests plus other calculated tests on board. It offers analysis of kidney functions, electrolytes, blood gases, CO-oximetry, and limited hematology. Since it’s a STAT analyzer, sample requirements are minimal and run time is less than two minutes.

The Wescor Colloid Osmometer is a human analyzer used to measure Colloid Osmotic/Oncotic pressure. Used in veterinary medicine predominantly by Universities and specialty practices, it aids in diagnosing and monitoring of hypoproteinemia.

The IDEXX Coag Dx is a coagulation analyzer. It’s used to detect coagulopathies stemming from a wide range of disease processes and rodenticide toxicities. While it can be used to initially diagnose an issue, it’s also used to monitor trends in coagulation while the patient is being treated both in hospital and post-discharge from the hospital.

The Hope Center recently added the IDEXX Snapshot DX analyzer which will allow us to start testing Immunoassays in house. This allows us the ability to run Cortisol levels (baseline, ACTH stims, High and Low dose Dex Supressions, and Mitotane (Lysodren) monitoring levels), total T4s (thyroid function), and bile acids.

In addition to our analyzers, The Hope Center’s lab offers a vast array of other forms of laboratory diagnostics including:

  • Complete Urinalysis (dipstick, sediment examination and cytology when needed)
  • Bloodtyping and crossmatching for both canines and felines
  • Manual reticulocyte counts (to assess regenerative vs. non-regenerative anemias)
  • Ethylene Glycol Tests (anti-freeze toxicity)
  • *IDEXX snap tests (4dx, feline triple, cPL, fPL)
  • Heska Solostep Heartworm tests for both dogs and cats
  • Fecal Analysis (Zinc Centrifugation floats, direct smears, and fecal cytologies)
  • In house Cytologies of body cavity effusions and mass/organ aspirates (including fluid analysis for effusions)
  • Specialty stains including Wright-Geimsa staining, Gram staining, Acid-Fast staining, and Sudan III staining

For diagnostics that cannot be performed in hospital, and for second opinions, The Hope Center also uses reference laboratories and numerous university laboratories around the country to ensure the best diagnostic testing available.
